Everton may let Cenk Tosun leave on free transfer to scrap large wage bill

Everton could be willing to let Cenk Tosun leave on a free transfer in January to ensure the player’s huge wage bill is scrapped from their books, according to A Haber.

The striker has been linked with a move back to Besiktas this winter and, with his Toffees contract running out at the end of this season, January would be the only time that the club could collect compensation for the player.

However, according to Turkish outlet A Haber the Premier League outfit may not even demand a fee, given their desperation to get Tosun’s £2.5m-a-year wage bill off their books.

Cut their losses

Although Everton could pick up a fee for their man, Besiktas would only really have to pay a minimal amount for an out-of-favour player whose contract only has six months remaining.

Compare this to the benefit of not having to pay him around £1m in wages until the end of the campaign, and the dilemma becomes quite easily solved.

Tosun has had a depressingly mediocre time at Goodison Park. Arriving from Besiktas in 2017, he’s gone on to play 58 times for Everton and doesn’t seem too likely to play again.

Rafael Benitez does have issues in the final third with Dominic Clavert-Lewin’s absence at the moment and, as a new face will likely be sought after in January, Tosun’s departure could also help in freeing up funds.

He’s not managed to prove his worth in the Premier League and, considering he’s well-loved at Besiktas, it would be wise to move him on while the Super Lig outfit are keen on taking him back.
