Ian Wright: Mason Holgate deserved to be sent off v Spurs

Ian Wright believes that Mason Holgate deserved to be sent off as Everton held Tottenham Hotspur to a 0-0 draw on Sunday in the Premier League.

The Toffees defender came on in the 82nd minute for Allan and did not expect to have an early bath.

However, his challenge on Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg was deemed worthy of a red card and it was a decision that Wright agreed with.

Speaking on Premier League Productions’ post-match show, he said, “Nasty. He’s literally 60-40 to win the ball. He could’ve won the ball without leaving the ground like that.”

Merited it

Holgate proved, in his ten-minute stint, why he’s not viewed as a regular by Rafa Benitez.

He came on with the view of seeing out this game and keeping the Spurs attackers at bay, but ended up getting himself sent off and leaving his side to defend with ten men.

Little can be argued about the red and we don’t think Benitez or Holgate would be against that decision.

It was a poor choice given the circumstances and the centre-back was duly sent his marching orders.

Marcel Brands must look to offload him as he’s clearly not good enough to be a first-team player at Goodison Park.

The Toffees could do with the money they make off his sale but it’s hard to see how he finds his way back into the team after such a dismal performance.
