Ashley Williams insists Everton do not have a plan under Benitez
Everton have suffered an alarming dip in form following an impressive start to the season, winning just one of their last six Premier League games.
They headed into the international break on the back of a drab goalless draw against Tottenham Hotspur, and Ashley Williams was not pleased with what he saw.
The former Toffees centre-back wants to know what the club’s plan is on the pitch under Rafa Benitez, and it is safe to say he is far from impressed with what he has seen so far.
The Welshman told BBC: “When I watch the Hammers, I know exactly what they are going to do. They are tough to break down, with some really dangerous players on the counter-attack and they have quality in certain areas.
“In short, they have a plan. The same goes for every team that is in and around the top of the table, but not Everton.
“I don’t watch Benitez’s side and think ‘right if the plan comes off, they will win today’ because I am not even sure what that plan is.
“I also don’t think their squad is good enough, or big enough with as many options as the other teams above them probably do.”
Element of truth?
Everton were all over the place in their last four games, and it is not surprising that they lost three of those.
With Abdoulaye Doucoure missing, the Toffees have struggled to get going in midfield, with Fabian Delph’s cameo against Wolves and performance at the weekend the only positive thing to have happened in the middle of the park.
Everton are yet to have a defined style of play under Benitez, and Williams is definitely not the only one that feels this way.
Being without Dominic Calvert-Lewin and having to chop and change his starting XI and tactics due to injuries and woeful shifts from some of the players have certainly not helped the Spaniard.
However, that should not be an excuse for some of the performances the fans have witnessed of recent.
The international break should help the Toffees boss sort things out, and hopefully, things would change when action resumes.
Everton visit Manchester City immediately after the break, and getting a result at the Etihad Stadium would be huge.
