Everton defender Seamus Coleman comments on his playing style

Everton defender Seamus Coleman has suggested he suffered physically due to his warrior-like playing style.

Coleman joined the Toffees in 2009 and has made over 350 appearances for the club in all competitions.

The 33-year-old has suggested that he has no plans at the moment to quit international football, rather he enjoys playing for the Republic of Ireland.

Coleman is an old-school type defender who loves to put his body on the line for club and country. This has led to him suffering more injuries than other experienced players.

At 33, players usually tend to take care of their health so as to prolong their careers. However, Coleman has suggested that he will always push the boundaries and admits that he suffers as a result.

“But for me personally, I will always push the boundaries and I won’t give it the correct timeframe that is needed,” said Coleman, as quoted by Liverpool Echo.

“I will try to push the manager at Everton or the manager at Ireland and sometimes it’s me that suffers because of that.

“I say time after time that I’m definitely going to change it and give it more time to recover. I can’t do it, I can’t put myself first.”

Need for a right-back

Coleman has been a great servant for the club, and he has been brilliant for the Toffees once again this season.

He has made eight appearances for the club so far in the Premier League.

His situation is a conundrum for Rafael Benitez. Coleman needs to be used wisely, considering his age. At the same time, the Toffees do not have another recognised right-back who can compliment him.

Jonjoe Kenny is not good enough for the first team, and he is likely to be sold in January. Ben Godfrey has played at right-back, but he offers much more while playing centrally.

While signing a top striker is a priority for Benitez in January, adding a right-back is also a pressing need.

Coleman has a contract at the club till 2023, and he is most likely to be offered an extension to prolong his career at the club.

However, he can’t change his playing style, and this is something we have to come to terms with. He is a leader, in the true sense, and we have to respect that.
