Everton may only make loan deals in January, opening door to Donny van de Beek move

Everton may only be able to make loan signings in the January transfer window, according to the Liverpool Echo.

Rafa Benitez is busy preparing his list of targets with just over six weeks to go until the window opens, but he could be majorly hampered by the club’s budget.

Midfield is a priority area for Everton, with Donny van de Beek and Aaron Ramsey both linked with a move to Goodison Park over the last week.

The Liverpool Echo writes that the Toffees boss is “currently working on the basis his budget may only allow for loan moves” due to “the constraints placed on the club by financial fair play regulations”.

The report suggests that this means a move is most likely for Manchester United’s van de Beek, who Everton made a late enquiry for in the summer and continue to gather information on; Ramsey is less likely to make the switch.

It adds that if the club can sell fringe players such as Cenk Tosun, Benitez will have more flexibility with his transfers as he also targets a winger and another option at right-back.

A good fit

With football finances still feeling the effects of the coronavirus pandemic, it appears a sensible move by Everton to put in place short-term budget constraints.

Plenty of value can still be found in the loan market and they may even be able to negotiate deals that allow them an option to buy next summer.

Donny van de Beek looks certain to leave Manchester United as he continues to be left on the bench by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and the Toffees will surely be one of the strongest candidates to sign him on loan.

The Dutchman will be guaranteed gametime, something he desperately craves, as Everton need more creativity in midfield.

If van de Beek can replicate the performances that earned him a move to Old Trafford – 10 goals and 11 assists in the 2019-20 campaign for Ajax – then he could be a key signing for Benitez.

In other Everton news, the Toffees could be handed a triple injury boost ahead of their trip to Manchester City on Sunday.
