Rafa Benitez explains Everton exit of Danny Donachie

Rafa Benitez has opened up on the departure of former head of medical service Danny Donachie after his recent Everton exit.

BBC journalist Alistair Magowan shared the Spaniard’s quotes via his personal Twitter profile on Friday morning [19/11/21].

Magowan wrote: “Asked Rafa Benitez to explain [the] departure of Everton’s head of medical service Danny Donachie. He said: ‘I can confirm that. We tried to manage the department in another way and I wish him all the best’.”

He added: “Was it because of Everton’s injury record this season? ‘No. We want to try and improve every department, and the way we want to do things is a little bit different. That’s it’.”

Benitez is never one to explain the finer points of his behind-the-scenes decision, so failing to open up on the intricacies of Donachie’s exit is no surprise.

Many assumed it was due to the number of injuries this season and, indeed, over the last few campaigns, that has decimated the Blues squad.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Richarlison and Abdoulaye Doucoure are just a few of the top names to have missed significant periods of the season already.

However, Benitez has refused to provide a firm answer on what exactly led to the club’s decision on Donachie.

Instead, he insisted that it is their wish to make changes to departments where they feel necessary.

Of course, this may be Benitez trying not to hang Donachie out to dry, which would be commendable if so.

But what’s clear is that the Spaniard is determined to change things where he sees fit and there could be further exits in the offing to the coaching and playing staff.

In other Everton news, Rafa Benitez has ruled this Blues star out until mid-December through injury.
