Jermaine Jenas slams Everton star Lucas Digne in 3-0 loss v Manchester City, makes Ben Godfrey suggestion

Jermaine Jenas suggests Ben Godfrey’s frustration got the better of him on Sunday as Everton lost 3-0 at Manchester City.

Godfrey, 23, was initially praised by the ex-England international on BBC Match of the Day 2, but his decision-making quickly went downhill, according to Jenas.

“This is the one here where I think you’re in that position and the frustration builds with City and what they can do to you,” he said. “This is what happens when he makes the wrong decision, Godfrey.

“He decided, actually, ‘I’m going in tight’. He’s on Gundogan, he’s going, ‘I’ve had enough’.”

Jenas was also unhappy with 28-year-old French international Lucas Digne.

“Lucas Digne completely switches off, it’s a simple run from Bernardo Silva,” he said after the home side nearly scored through the Portuguese playmaker.

Defensive indiscipline

Rafa Benitez is supposed to be a great organiser of his defence, but the Blues have been porous in recent weeks.

Of course, injuries have hit the squad hard, with Dominic-Calvert Lewin and Abdoulaye Doucoure two of the big-name absentees.

That affects the whole make-up of the starting XI as there is likely less confidence in their replacements, who are not at the same level.

That invites more pressure on the Blues defence, which has also been without Yerry Mina for the last five games.

However, a defence made up of Godfrey, Seamus Coleman, Michael Keane and Lucas Digne, in front of Jordan Pickford, should still be doing better.

10 goals conceded in four games just isn’t good enough, and individuals, as well as the team as a whole, need to up their game.
