Ian Wright and Alan Shearer share verdict on potential Everton penalty in 1-0 loss v Brentford
Ian Wright and Alan Shearer are in agreement that Everton deserved to be awarded a penalty in their 1-0 loss at Brentford on Sunday.
Everton were beaten by a first-half Ivan Toney penalty after VAR advised the referee to take another look at an incident involving Andros Townsend and Frank Onyeka.
Speaking on BBC Match of the Day 2 [29/11/21], Wright believes the right call was made to hand the home side a spot-kick.

“It was a penalty, his foot, Andros, has caught him in the face there,” Wright said.
However, the BBC duo believe the Blues were hard done by at the other end when Salomon Rondon and Charlie Goode become involved with one another.
“That should be a penalty, Goode’s got hold of him there,” Shearer said.
Wright: “I think that’s a pen.”

Tale of two pens
VAR intervened for Brentford’s penalty but, for some reason, did not get involved when Rondon was seemingly fouled.
It only added to the frustration Everton felt during the game as they battled to get back into the game, to no avail.
Did they deserve a point? Possibly not – the Blues huffed and puffed but the lack of quality was evident throughout, and while Brentford were nothing special themselves, their sheer grit and determination saw them through.
But one still expects the officials to apply some consistency in their decisions, and it was a clear oversight from the VAR officials not to ask the referee to take a second look at the incident with Rondon and Goode.
Everton are now seven games without a win, stretching back to September 25 [2-0 versus Norwich City].
