Thierry Henry highlights Jordan Pickford error v Liverpool

Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford made a key error for Mohamed Salah’s first goal in Wednesday night’s 4-1 defeat to Liverpool, according to Thierry Henry.

Salah doubled Liverpool’s lead at Goodison Park as he raced towards goal down the right-hand side before finishing past the England number one.

Jordan Henderson had earlier opened the scoring and after Demarai Gray pulled one back for Everton before halftime, Salah netted after the break and then Diogo Jota secured a 4-1 win for the Reds.

Speaking on Amazon Prime Video at halftime, Henry picked apart Salah’s first goal and suggested Pickford was too far to his left when the shot was taken.

“Pickford helped him a lot because he actually left the axe of the goal,” he said.

“Obviously when you have a player like Mo Salah and you show him that, he will punish you.

“At one point he had it covered. All he had to do was to creep and block him, but he obviously didn’t.”

Fine margins

Sometimes it comes down to fine margins in goalkeeping and this is a prime example of that.

Pickford only needs to be a couple of small steps further to his right, but they are crucial steps with regards to being able to make a save.

The England international has faced questions over his positioning previously, so it is certainly an area of his game that he needs to work on.

However, the goalkeeper also has every right to question those in front of him for their role in allowing Salah to score.

The Egyptian is allowed so much space and time on the right hand side to bear down on goal, with Lucas Digne in particular caught way out of position.

There is also little cover from centre-backs Michael Keane and Ben Godfrey as Salah gets into the box.

That said, take nothing away from the finish from the Liverpool forward, who has now scored 19 goals this season.

In other Everton news, the Toffees could look to sell one of their star players to raise transfer funds.
