Rafa Benitez shares Everton transfer plans for January

Rafa Benitez has suggested that he will try to improve the Everton squad in the January transfer window.

The Toffees spent only £1.7m in the summer transfer window with the club struggling to cope with Financial Fair Play rules.

Ahead of the Premier League clash against Arsenal, Benitez has made it very clear that the club won’t sell any of their players, unless it is necessary.

“We have been talking about that [transfers], but I think it’s time to concentrate on what we can do every week,” said Benitez, as quoted by Liverpool Echo.

“Our market is clear, there are players you can get and players you cannot, that’s the reality.

“We need to know these players want to come. In terms of our players, they cannot go if we don’t want to. We don’t want to lose our players if it is not necessary. If we don’t want to sell players, we don’t need to sell players.”

Complete mess

The Everton boss is under loads of pressure after the Toffees failed to win in their last eight games in the Premier League.

The injuries to key players did play a part, and but the overall performance has dropped horribly, with confidence among the players hitting rock-bottom.

It is day-light clear that Everton did spend a lot of money on players in recent years, but the squad depth is still shallow.

Put it simply, the recruitment has been below par.

Benitez is (partly) paying the penalty for it, although it can be argued he hasn’t been able to get the best out of the squad he has inherited.

At the same time, the likes of Demarai Gray and Andros Townsend have made a big impact. It reflects that given time and money, Benitez can bring in the right players at the club.

However, there’s a spiral downfall at the moment, and arresting this gradual decline is necessary. How Benitez is going to do it is unknown.
