Alan Stubbs reacts on Twitter as Marcel Brands leaves Everton

Alan Stubbs has delivered his verdict on the news that Marcel Brands has left his director of football role at Everton.

Reacting via his personal Twitter profile in the early hours of Monday (6 December), the ex-Everton defender and coach suggests there could be more exits on the way.

He said: “Club Statement…I wonder if it only stops there? Hasn’t worked at all and I wonder if any more follow as he said in his own words when confronted after the derby ‘is it just the players’ but surely as director of football that’s what his job was to fix.”

Stubbs returned six hours later to add: “I get Marcel Brands will be the scapegoat but how many times did we hear from him?? Was his recruitment a success?? Is the club in a better place than when he joined??

“If he wasn’t allowed to do his job then why stay for three-and-a-half years if he was being undermined? Clearout.”

Brands to speak out soon?

There was very little correspondence from Brands during the course of his tenure at Goodison Park, particularly during the last couple of years.

Perhaps that’s a result of his diminishing involvement at boardroom level – the absence of quotes on the club website when the Blues appointed Rafa Benitez in the summer was telling.

From the outside, it looks like the Dutchman’s wings were clipped by Farhad Moshiri who has been ill-advised by those around him, particularly intermediaries.

There has been a lack of structure around the club in recent years and no clear vision from top to bottom, something Brands was supposed to implement.

Somehow, Brands may emerge with the best reputation of them all, given the noises surrounding just how much control he had, or didn’t have.

It will be interesting to see where he shows up next, while the Blues will surely begin the hunt for his successor.

Perhaps Brands will speak out soon over what went wrong for him at Everton, though he may well have had to sign an NDA (non-disclosure agreement) preventing him from telling all, at least for a set period of time.

In other Everton news, the Blues have green-lighted a stunning Blues star loan exit in January as this American-owned club plots a mid-season swoop.
