Chris Sutton slams Ben Godfrey for challenge on Takehiro Tomiyasu
Chris Sutton has slammed Everton defender Ben Godfrey on BBC Radio 5 Live for stamping on Takehiro Tomiyasu during Monday’s night clash.
The Toffees came from behind to secure a 2-1 win over Arsenal at Goodison Park today (6 December), but the Englishman was lucky to remain on the pitch after VAR checked his challenge for the Japanese for serious foul play in the first-half.
Godfrey was not booked despite putting his boot on the face of the Gunners man, and Sutton cannot believe he was allowed to remain on the pitch.

He said (as shown on their website): “Looking at it [Ben Godfrey’s challenge] it looked like a red card.
“You know where your feet are going to land. From the picture I’ve seen I’m gobsmacked it wasn’t a red card. Somehow VAR miss it.”
Reckless
Everton finally ended their woeful run, securing a hard-fought win that helps relieve the pressure on Rafa Benitez, but it would not have been impossible had Godfrey been sent off.
His challenge was a reckless one, and while VAR reckoned he did not mean it, he would not have had any complaints had referee Mike Dean shown him his marching orders.
He was finally booked in the second half having been asking for it all game, but he was lucky to have been on the pitch up till that moment.

Everton deserved their victory, but Godfrey was close to costing them with a rash and needless challenge.
The Toffees were on the back of six defeats and two draws heading into tonight’s game, and they appeared to have luck against them after Richarlison saw two goals ruled out for offside.
The Brazilian was third time lucky, though, grabbing the equaliser before Demarai Gray left it late to bag the winner and hand his side all three points.
In other Everton news, the Toffees are plotting January loan-to-buy bid for centre-mid hailed by Jack Grealish last month.
