Sky Sports journalist: Everton want to sign Swiss star Denis Zakaria amid 2022 contract expiry

Everton want to sign Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Denis Zakaria, according to Sky Sports journalist Angelo Mangiante.

Writing via his personal Twitter profile on Tuesday afternoon (7 December), Mangiante claims a trio of Premier League clubs are in the race to sign the 25-year-old Swiss international.

“Liverpool, West Ham and Everton are interested in Denis Zakaria, contract expiring in 2022,” he wrote.

This isn’t Everton’s first link to Zakarai this year – in August, German news outlet BILD claimed the Toffees were chasing him after his price tag was slashed by £17million.

Popular German journalist Christian Falk even went as far as to claim on his personal Twitter profile that Everton were in talks to sign Zakaria.

However, nothing came of it as Everton’s financial plight became clear.

Zakaria remained at Monchengladbach and has made 13 appearances for them in the 2021/22 campaign, 12 of which have come in the Bundesliga.

He has scored two goals and registered one assist.

However, despite being a regular starter for the German side, it appears his future may lie elsewhere, and he can sign a pre-contract agreement in January as his current deal gets closer to its expiry.

He may even be someone that Everton can land on a cut-price deal in January if Monchengladbach are desperate to recoup some cash for him.

The Blues are clearly in dire need of a new central midfielder.

Abdoulaye Doucoure is one of the stars of the side and Allan is a mainstay, but options are limited behind the duo.

Andre Gomes impressed from the bench on Monday night (6 December) when the Blues beat Arsenal 2-1, but doubts remain over his fitness and form over a long-term period, while Tom Davies, Fabian Delph and Jean-Phillipe Gbamin are surely on their way out of Goodison Park, if buyers can be found.

In other Everton news, the Blues have green-lighted a stunning Blues star loan exit in January as this American-owned club plots a mid-season swoop.
