Everton Fan Q & A: Will Benitez be allowed to build his squad?

Every week we’ll be asking Everton fans on our Twitter account for questions that will be answered by Goodison News correspondent Jack Cunningham. You can join in by following the Goodison News Twitter account and watching out for weekly mailbag posts.

Everton have had a pretty big week both off and on the field.

First, Marcel Brands left the club on Sunday as the Toffees prepare to change how they go about transfer business.

Then on the pitch, Everton managed to beat Arsenal and move closer to that top ten, despite not winning in eight before that.

However, with Brands gone, what does that mean for Rafael Benitez’s future and his ability to shape and mould the squad?

With that in mind, we asked for your burning questions about all things Everton-related for Goodison News correspondent Jack Cunningham to answer. One Toffees fan wanted to know if his club would hand over the power to Benitez in the transfer market?

Thanks for the question, Jeffrey.

This is certainly something that will be on many Evertonians’ minds after Brands left the club.

Apparently, the Dutchman and the Spaniard never really saw eye to eye, and Brands didn’t recommend Benitez to Farhad Moshiri [Voetbal International].

You would also have to say that out of the four signings the Toffees made this summer, none of them were likely to be Brands’ ideas.

In his time with Everton, the Dutchman pushed for signings like Moise Kean rather than older and more experienced players like Salomon Rondon.

Now, given that Benitez is set to be involved in finding the Toffees’ next director of football, you would think he will have a lot more say in transfers going forward.

If Benitez is involved in picking the director of football, that likely means he will try and convince the Toffees to pick someone he can work with [Daily Mail].

Therefore, I would suggest that Benitez has won his first power struggle, and all of the Toffees’ next signings in January at least will probably be his choice.

Now, it remains to be seen if that is good or bad, but at least it appears as if Everton might have a clear recruitment strategy going forward.

In other Everton news, many Toffees fans are set to be hit by new government laws.
