Rafa Benitez must sell Everton defender Yerry Mina

Rafa Benitez must take a ruthless call and sell Everton centre-back Yerry Mina, either in the January window or next summer.

Following the departure of Marcel Brands, Benitez is expected to have more authority over transfers. However, with funds not available in plenty, a sell-to-buy model could be adopted.

The 27-year-old is a strong defender and talsohere is no doubt at all that he is the club’s best centre-back when fit and firing.

His towering presence at the back and his leadership qualities are admirable. He plays with passion and transmits bundles of energy on the pitch.

But there’s another side of the story too. He is injury prone and it has reached a point where a serious decision needs to be taken on his future.

Since joining the club in 2018, he has made only 64 starts in the Premier League.

This season he came back to the starting line-up after a long injury lay-off. He picked up a calf injury once again during the 2-1 victory against Arsenal.

In such a scenario, it becomes really difficult for any manager to forge a strong plan with his best player. It hampers the plan. It hampers the system.

But most importantly, Benitez revealed (6 December) after the match that Mina’s situation is difficult to manage.

He has also suggested that Mina is likely to pick up more injuries.

If he can’t get the best out of the defender, then there’s no point sticking with the player.

Mina has a contract at the club till 2023, and it’s time for the Toffees to actively look to sell him. He will have a solid resale value, and the club should look to use that and reinvest in the squad.

Losing him would be a blow, but then again keeping him is making no difference.
