Everton make Matias Vecino enquiries as Uruguay star plots Inter Milan exit in January

Everton have made enquiries over the potential availability of Inter Milan midfielder Matias Vecino in January, according to FC Inter News.

Vecino, 30, is out of contract at the Serie A side in June 2022 and can sign a pre-contract agreement with other clubs next month.

Napoli and Everton have been named as clubs who have enquired about signing the 56-cap Uruguay international.

With Inter boss Simon Inzaghi considering him a bit-part player, starting him just once in Serie A this season, Alessandro Lucci, Vecino’s agent, is trying to determine if a January exit will be granted.

Inter are said to be open to his sale if he requests a move and an opportunity present itself, with the Champions League club looking to use any proceeds towards a move for Cagliari’s Nahitan Nandez.

Wrong profile

Vecino is a vastly experienced midfielder who helped Inter win the 2020/21 Serie A title, but at 30, he’s not what Everton need right now.

Rafa Benitez already has a few experienced midfielders in the shape of Allan, Abdoulaye Doucoure and Andre Gomes.

What they need now is more dynamism and creativity in the middle of midfield.

Someone like Conor Gallagher, on loan at Crystal Palace from Chelsea, would fit the bill, though how likely the Champions League holders are to sell remains to be seen.

But that’s the profile of player Everton should be after – young, hungry and with the ability to get around the pitch.

Vecino, while offering solidity in the midfield and able to score the odd goal, would be a signing that smacks of a lack of ambition.

Free agents might look attractive, especially if the transfer budget is tight, but the Blues must be patient and wait for the right midfielder to present himself.

In other Everton news, the Blues are ready to trigger the release clause of this ‘Incredible’ 25-year-old La Liga star in January.
