Chelsea v Everton set to go ahead despite COVID cases as Sky Sports News footage emerges

Chelsea’s clash with Everton on Thursday night (16 December) is not currently due to be postponed, according to Ryan Taylor.

The Express journalist, responding to a question via his personal Twitter profile over whether positive COVID cases in the Chelsea camp could see the Stamford Bridge meeting called off, claims it’s all systems go at the present time.

Taylor wrote: “Seems to be going ahead at the moment. Everton arrived at Euston in last 30 mins.”

Minutes later, Taylor added: “The understanding is Chelsea vs Everton going ahead as things stand. Toffees arrived at Euston in last hour, as pictured on Sky Sports News. Chelsea said to have carried out more tests this morning. Have to feel for travelling Everton supporters… “

For now?

This is a story that keeps on developing throughout the day as COVID causes chaos in the Premier League.

One match has already been called off tonight – Leicester City versus Tottenham Hotspur.

Now, there are fears that Everton’s clash with Chelsea could be next.

It’s something Brentford’s boss Thomas Frank is advocating for – earlier on Thursday morning, he called for a ‘circuit-breaker’ in the Premier League, with all games called off in the top-tier and League Cup before Christmas, allowing teams to recover in time for the Boxing Day fixtures.

It’s a difficult decision to make – the deluge of games, particularly over the festive period, makes it incredibly difficult to reschedule games, not least because of pressure from broadcasters.

But the Premier League have to put safety first and, if there is a significant risk that the players, and others present at Stamford Bridge, could be in danger of contracting the virus tonight, then the game needs to be called off.
