Trevor Sinclair heaps praise on Anthony Gordon after Chelsea performance

Trevor Sinclair has heaped praise on Everton youngster Anthony Gordon for his performance in the 1-1 draw with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Gordon started on the wing in a much-changed Everton lineup after Rafa Benitez was left without 12 first-team players through illness and injury for the game against Thomas Tuchel’s side.

After a great performance, it was Gordon’s free-kick that found the outstretched leg of fellow academy star Jarrad Branthwaite to equalise for the Toffees and earn them a hard-fought point.

The 20-year-old has been a regular in the first-team picture this season, making 15 appearances in all competitions for Everton but that assist was his first of the season

Speaking on commentary for talkSPORT, former England midfielder Trevor Sinclair was singing his praises and said it has been ‘an absolute joy’ to watch him develop this season.

“I can’t tell you how good that free-kick was. It’s a superbly flighted ball. And it’s a great finish, he had to stretch every bit of his body.

“Mendy had no chance, but I have to say, Anthony Gordon! Watching him develop this season has been an absolute joy.”

Star of the future

Gordon has been on the radar of the first-team for a while, since first catching the eye of Marco Silva a few years ago.

He got his break under Carlo Ancelotti last season and has carried that confidence and work ethic into this season under Benitez, being rewarded with regular football.

His pace, dribbling ability and crossing have been a feature of his talent and the youngster who was described as a “star of the future” by Sky Sports last year is living up to his potential.

Everton have brought through the likes of Wayne Rooney and Ross Barkley in the past, and they may have their next academy darling now in Gordon.
