Newcastle interested in Everton defender Mason Holgate

Newcastle United are keen to sign Everton defender Mason Holgate in the January transfer window, according to reports from Sky Sports.

The Magpies are looking to bolster their defence in January, and they’ve earmarked Holgate as one of their options.

The 25-year-old has struggled for regular games this season, having managed only five Premier League starts.

No way

Holgate may have struggled to get games so far, but no way Everton should sell him.

He is a fantastic defender, with Rio Ferdinand even claiming him as ‘one of the best’ young centre-backs in the Premier League.

With Yerry Mina struggling for fitness, Holgate still has got a big role to play this season.

At the same time, Rafa Benitez could feel that Holgate is a bankable asset.

He has got a contract at the club till 2025, and Everton are likely to demand a high transfer fee for free if they at all decide to sell him.

Holgate picked up a red card against Tottenham Hotspur but came back strongly with a brilliant performance in the 2-1 win over Arsenal.

There was a drop in performance against Crystal Palace and Chelsea, and this is where he needs to improve.

Benitez will be hoping to see him delivering on a consistent basis. A move to Newcastle looks highly unlikely at this stage.

They have the money to spend in the upcoming window, it’s time for the Toffees to test their resolve and make them cough up a huge fee if they want any of the squad.
