Kevin Campbell: Everton should have used under-23s rather than postponing games

We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…

Kevin Campbell has hit back at the likes of Everton having Premier League games postponed because of COVID-19 this month.

The ex-Toffees talisman questioned the point of having academies in football if younger players aren’t going to be used at times such as these.

Campbell went on to admit that clubs such as Everton could have unearthed a “gem” talent if they went ahead with games.

Everton

“I honestly do,” he exclusively told Goodison News.

“What’s the point in having under-23s and these up and coming youngsters if you’re not going to use them?

“I understand that it’s not ideal, but that’s why you have a football club. When there are issues, we’ve seen before all this situation where clubs have had outbreaks of flu.

“Dip into the youngsters, give them a chance, who knows? You may unearth a gem.”

Everton

Has a point.

Everton did use the majority of their younger players in the 1-1 draw against Chelsea before Christmas, meaning Rafa Benitez was more than happy to utilise his academy.

Things must have gotten much worst for him to request the Burnley game be postponed on more than one occasion on Boxing Day.

The likes of Jarrad Branthwaite, Ellis Simms and Anthony Gordon have all benefitted from this breakout in the Toffees senior squad, with injuries also taking their toll.

With Newcastle to come on Thursday evening, Campbell could get his wish of some younger gems in the side, if it goes ahead.
