The right-back, who is in his 13th season as an Everton player and his third as captain, is relieved to have teammates around him who help lead the side. Coleman also confirmed that, despite his advancing years, he certainly gives his all for the club.

Speaking to Evertonfc.com, Coleman said: “I know what I am doing to try to have a positive impact on the team every day.

“I might not be the playing presence I was at 23 or 24, but as a captain and in training every day, I am giving my all, approaching it as if I was a 22-year-old.”

He went on to praise his colleagues’ leadership qualities, saying: “Allan is a great leader, someone who helps me along as much as he can.

“His English is improving every week and he has excellent leadership qualities.

“And Dominic Calvert-Lewin is so important for us and starting to show real leadership qualities.”

Leadership is key

Despite being Everton’s full-time captain, Coleman will definitely be relieved that other players can also step up and help guide the side to success.

It is no secret that Everton have underperformed at times this season. The Toffees sit in 15th, comfortably away from relegation.

However, in the New Year, boss Rafa Benítez will be putting his all into steering the club further away from the drop zone and achieving a commendable position in the league table.

The Spaniard will turn to Coleman as his captain but the leadership skills and presence of other squad members will certainly be a huge help.

Experienced heads in the squad such as Coleman, Begović, Townsend and Delph are sure to be key in pushing youngsters who are breaking into the first team.

Anthony Gordon, Tyler Onyango and Lewis Dobbin will certainly benefit from this crop of seasoned pros and their extensive experience of Premier League football.

Everton fans will be hopeful that this set-up will secure a solid league finish for them in 2022.
