Appointing Wayne Rooney as Everton manager would be bonkers’ according to TalkSPORT pundit

Derby County manager Wayne Rooney would be a “bonkers” appointment in the Everton dugout, according to Darren Bent on TalkSPORT.

Rooney’s Rams are currently bottom of the Championship, 11 points from safety but they have done an outstanding job to be that close after receiving a 21-point deduction for off-field issues.

But no matter if England’s all-time leading goal scorer keeps them up or not, Bent thinks Everton appointing their ex-player at Goodison Park goes against their recent employment policy.

On TalkSPORT’s Drivetime show, Bent said: “(Carlo) Ancelotti who has been a superstar manager, Rafa (Benitez) who has won the biggest trophies stabilised the club and then Wayne Rooney… that would be bonkers.”

Just what Everton need

Yes, Rooney’s managerial record is nothing compared to Ancelotti or Benitez. But this is his first job in the dugout and no one can deny he is doing an outstanding job at Pride Park.

if he manages to keep Derby up this season, it could well be one of the greatest seasons any team has ever had.

To battle against a hefty points deduction and a complete transfer ban, limiting them to only free agents, and still be in touch with those above them is nothing short of sensational.

And maybe a bit of that fight that Rooney has instilled in Derby is exactly what is needed at Goodison Park right now.

The 36-year-old has an undoubted passion for football and his boyhood club and that is what Ancelotti and Benitez have both lacked.

Fellow academy graduate Anthony Gordon has become a fan favourite this season for displaying the same kind of attributes and it is clearly something Everton fans can get behind.

Having one of their own at the helm, driving his passion for the club into the players might just see Everton’s fortunes turn around.

In other Everton news, Rafael Benitez has been handed a big injury boost with a “world-class” player close to a return.
