Aston Villa to bank on Gerrard’s influence as they join race for Everton left-back Lucas Digne

Aston Villa have joined the race for the signature of Everton left-back Lucas Digne this month, according to Football Insights.

The transfer account, with nearly 10,000 followers on Twitter and is followed by respected journalist John Percy and Jamie Carragher, posted the information on Tuesday (4 January).

The Toffees are open to cashing in on Digne, 28, before the end of the January transfer window, and he is not short of suitors, with Steven Gerrard’s side the latest to have been linked with a move.

Football Insights said: “It sounds like Villa are indeed trying to sign Digne.

“But so are three or four other Premier League teams.

“Let’s see if Gerrard has the pull that the owners/CEO hoped for.”

Good

Villa billionaire owners Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens are known to be willing spenders in the transfer markets, and they should be keen to back new boss Gerrard this month.

The former Rangers boss has been tasked with guiding the Midlands outfit to Europe, and it appears he is keen on a move for the Everton ace.

Digne is one of the best left-backs in the top-flight, but whether a move to Villa would appeal to him remains to be seen.

They could be willing to meet the Toffees’ demands for the Frenchman, and the Goodison Park outfit could do with some cash injection right now.

Everton

Everton struggled to make big-money signings in the summer due to Financial Fair Play limitations, and they could need to sell this month after completing two permanent deals.

Digne has everything Gerrard wants in a left-back, and with Rafa Benitez no longer keen on working with him, his former charge at Liverpool could take advantage of the situation by making a swoop in the coming days.

In other Everton news, the Toffees are plotting January loan-to-buy bid for centre-mid hailed by Jack Grealish last month.
