Everton announce appointment of Graeme Sharp as non-executive director

Everton have added former Toffees strikers Graeme Sharp to their board in a non-executive role which will see him relinquish other roles within the club.

The Scot played over 300 games for the Merseyside club scoring over 10 goals and now returns to Goodison Park in a new role.

The 12-time Scotland international was thrilled to rejoin the club as he spoke to the Toffees’ media.

“This club is in my blood,” Sharp said, “I have enjoyed many great days as a Blue – and joining the board and being able to play a part in shaping Everton’s future is one of the greatest honours of all.”

A man to Challenge Authority

Sharp’s appointment to the club board will come as a welcome addition to Everton fans with former supporter favourites often popular options if given the choice.

Everton chairman Bill Kenwright could have been forgiven for adding another ‘yes-man’ to his board to try and keep harmony at the top of the club but his own comments appear to suggest the opposite has happened with Sharp.

The 76-year-old said: “We were determined to have someone join us with not only great knowledge of Everton but also extensive football insight and experience. Someone who could support and challenge. And in Sharpy’s case, we’ve got this in abundance.”

Most notably, the words “support and challenge” spring to attention.

This could suggest that the Toffees’ slow fall down the Premier League pecking order no longer suits Kenwright and he wants people in that will look to oppose decisions if they disagree, rather than simply accept them and move on.

It is undoubtedly an important time for Everton with relegation a real threat for Rafael Benitez’s side and the appointment of Sharp could see the start of a turnaround.
