Everton table bid for Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff

Everton have tabled a bid to sign Newcastle United central midfielder Sean Longstaff, according to Sky Sports.

In an update via their Transfer Centre on Wednesday night [5 January, 10:47pm], Sky report that while the Blues have made a bid for the 24-year-old, Newcastle are keen to keep hold of him.

Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie also reported on Wednesday night that Newcastle have made an offer of £22.5million for Lucas Digne that includes Longstaff.

Confusing

It’s fair to say that the report by Sky Sports and the update by Downie are rather conflicting.

If Newcastle do not want to lose Longstaff then why would they offer him in a player-plus-cash deal for Digne?

We’re not sure why Rafa Benitez wants Longstaff anyway other than the fact he didn’t do too badly during his previous spell in charge of Newcastle.

The 24-year-old has come on since Benitez’s days at St James’ Park but come on, we should be looking at better players.

Longstaff has played `13 times in the Premier League this season for Newcastle and in our opinion, he’s not really someone who’s caught the eye and has arguably played a role in what has been a disappointing campaign in the North-East.

He does have his fans, though.

In February 2019, Benitez was quoted by the Guardian as saying that Longstaff should have been in the England set-up.

Longstaff’s also been compared to Michael Carrick by Benitez [Guardian].

Matt Ritchie also hailed the midfielder. He said: “From the first day he came into our group to now he’s exactly the same guy. Sean’s going to have one hell of a career if he keeps his feet on the floor and keeps working. But he’ll do that, no doubt about it. He’s a top player and a fantastic lad.”

Longstaff isn’t bad but we need better in order to improve this squad of players.

In other Everton news, Farhad Moshiri and Rafa Benitez are at odds over signing this player.
