Alan Myers comes to Rafa Benitez defence after bizarre Peter Reid comments
Sky Sports journalist Alan Myers has come to the defence of Everton manager Rafa Benitez after he name-dropped Peter Reid during a press conference rant.
The Toffees boss was responding to questions about the future of defender Lucas Digne, when he brought up club legend Reid and asked what fans thought he would do in the situation.
Fans reacted angrily online to the quotes, taking them as a dig at the fans and a man who is loved by the fan base but Myers took a different view of the comments.

Coming to the Spaniard’s defence on Twitter, Myers believed the comments had been taken in the wrong context by angry fans.
“I may have it wrong but I actually took Benitez’s comments about Reidy as him saying ‘What would a true Evertonian, who’s also been a manager, think if a player didn’t want to play for the club’ rather than having a go at Reidy but as I say, I may have it wrong?”
Mistake
It seems that Everton fans are so annoyed at Benitez for their current position in the league and the fact he was ever appointed at all, that they’ve decided that everything he does is wrong.
On this occasion, though it could seem clear that they’ve decided to get angry for the wrong reasons because what Benitez said was obviously not a dig at Reid.
Benitez was trying to get fans to understand why he was making the decisions he was making and that they were in the best interests of the club.
The mention of Reid was to make fans see that someone who loves the club would always make that decision too, so he was trying to prove himself and his intentions.
Clearly, it didn’t come across the way it was intended, but it’s good to see someone sticking up for him.
