Paulo Fonseca mooted as next Everton manager with Rafa Benitez on verge of sack

Paulo Fonseca has been mooted as a potential replacement for Rafa Benitez with Everton on the verge of sacking the Spaniard, according to The Express.

After losing 2-1 to struggling Norwich on Saturday, Fabrizio Romano reported that the Blues board are looking to sack Benitez “imminently”.

The Express has suggested a few successors for Benitez and one of them is 48-year-old Fonseca.

It is understood that several things about Fonseca would appeal to Everton, including his style of player, the fact he’s young and that he’s available immediately having left Roma at the end of last season.

Quickfire appointment

Farhad Moshiri deserves a lot of criticism for the way he’s handled his ownership at Goodison but unfortunately, the mantle will ultimately fall upon him again to find a new manager.

Benitez looks dead and buried on Merseyside with his controversial spell at Goodison set to end before it really got going.

Unlike most fans, we were willing to give the Spaniard a chance after he was hired. We weren’t thrilled with it and he was never our first choice. But we were open to seeing how he got on once it was sorted.

However, it just hasn’t happened for Benitez and the former Liverpool manager’s chances of continuing in charge look shot.

If it was down to use, Duncan Ferguson would be the man to turn to as he knows the club, he’ll kick the players into gear – perhaps literally – and he did well in charge of us in an interim capacity in 2019.

Fonseca has a good CV but he’s had so many jobs in his managerial career already and has only managed to spend over two years at a club on one occasion.

That was at Shakhtar Donetsk where he won three league titles in Ukraine. But managing them and winning leagues in a two-team league really doesn’t impress us.
