Everton consider appointing former La Liga boss Diego Martinez

Everton are reportedly plotting a swoop for former Granada manager Diego Martinez after sacking Rafa Benitez.

According to the Mirror, the 41-year-old is being considered by the Toffees along with Niko Kovac and Derby manager Wayner Rooney.

Martinez made a name for himself at Granada by guiding them to their first-ever European finish as well as securing promotion to La Liga.

In his managerial career thus far, which has spanned over 15 years, he has managed a total of 470 games along different age groups.

Worth considering

Here’s another Martinez who’s being considered for the job, but thankfully, it’s not Roberto.

The former Toffees boss is unlikely to come into the conversation as he’s currently with Belgium ahead of the World Cup later this year.

Diego Martinez is certainly a left-field option that few Toffees fans would’ve heard of.

He started his managerial career at a very early age as he retired from playing football when he was only 20.

While his early years were spent at smaller Spanish clubs, he got his big break in 2009 when he managed Sevilla’s C team.

Since then, he’s only been climbing the latter with his most recent job being his most successful one at Granada.

He also won the Miguel Munoz Trophy in 2019 which is given by Marca to honour the best manager in Spain.

Whether or not he’s actually approached by Everton remains to be seen, but he clearly is one worth looking out for.
