Everton ‘make contact’ with Gennaro Gattuso over managerial role – report

Everton have made a move for Gennaro Gattuso as their next manager, with ‘contact in the last hours’ made according to TuttoMercatoWeb.

According to the Italian outfit, Gattuso has finished ‘top of the list’ of potential candidates to take over from Rafa Benitez who was sacked on Sunday after defeat to Norwich.

They state that contact has been made ‘in the last hours’ to understand the feasibility of a move for the 44-year-old former Milan boss.

Gattuso is reportedly the top target for the Everton board, while Wayne Rooney, Roberto Martinez and Andrea Pirlo are also of interest to the Toffees if Gattuso can’t be brought in.

They also state that they expect more news ‘in the next few hours’.

Weird one

Gattuso would be an odd appointment for Everton at this stage and one that certainly comes from left-field.

Gattuso had a great time as manager of AC Milan and then did well at Napoli before leaving in the summer, but since then hasn’t done much.

He was linked with the Tottenham job in the summer, only for the north London club to pull out after a fan revolt against his appointment.

Everton need defensive solidity to a side that is now battling relegation, and Gattuso certainly brings that but he isn’t the most experience coach at the highest level and there would surely be better options out there.

He does present a unique opportunity though, as a free agent there is an easy deal to be done there and he has shown he is capable of building a good unit with limited resources so maybe he deserves the chance.
