Tony Cottee reacts on Twitter after Everton sack Rafa Benitez

Tony Cottee has shared his reaction on Twitter after Everton confirmed the sacking of Rafa Benitez on Sunday (16 January).

The former Everton hero has suggested that it was a “right decision” taken by the club and that Benitez should have never got the job in the first place.

The Toffees managed just one win in their last 13 Premier League games under the Spaniard.

Cottee wrote on Twitter: “The right decision to sack Rafa Benitez.

“He should have never been appointed in the first place. Now give the Evertonians a manager they really want and who understands the club. The squad should not be where they are.”

The decision need to be spot on

Everton have learnt a hard lesson here.

They had a chance to select the right candidate after the departure of Carlo Ancelotti, and the club went in for Benitez who wasn’t a popular choice.

He was given loads of power. The Spaniard got rid of popular players at the club, got complete authority over transfer dealings, and brought in players of his choice.

However, the results didn’t improve, and the club have done the right thing here by relieving him of his duties.

Now, the board must bring in the right profile of a manager who can repair the damage and can take the club to a new height.

Cottee is probably hinting that Everton should appoint someone like Duncan Ferguson or Wayne Rooney – those who know the club inside out.

However, an interim manager probably isn’t ideal at the moment. There’s still a lot of games to play for and Everton can still salvage their season if they can turn it around.
