Duncan Ferguson takes Everton training, could be in charge v Aston Villa – report

Duncan Ferguson took Everton training on Tuesday and is ‘in position’ to be in charge of the team when they face Aston Villa this weekend, according to Mike McGrath.

The Toffees sacked Rafa Benitez at the weekend after defeat to Norwich and have been searching for a new manager ever since, with Ferguson among names listed as candidates.

Ferguson is no stranger to the interim role as the Blues step up the search for their new manager midway through January.

Ferguson previously took interim charge of the club after Marco Silva was sacked, taking over for four games.

It’s unknown how long he will hold this role for this time around, with initial suggestions claiming the club wanted a new manager in place before this game.

Swerve

The decision to have Ferguson in charge for the game against Villa is a swerve from original plans, as Everton wanted the new boss in place before then.

It could potentially make the decision tougher if he were to get a positive result and reaction, with the former striker putting his name into the hat for a long-term tenure.

Everton

The club are set to interview Frank Lampard and Wayne Rooney for the position [Telegraph] after failing in their pursuit to bring Roberto Martinez back to the club.

Now Ferguson has the chance to really force the hands of the Everton hierarchy by delivering good results, turning the atmosphere at the club around and making himself impossible to ignore.

Everton have won just once in 13 games and sit in 16th place, just six points above the relegation zone.
