Newcastle want Everton ace Yerry Mina, Benitez’s exit could complicate things

Newcastle United are keen on signing Everton centre-back Yerry Mina before the January transfer window shuts, according to TEAMtalk.

However, the recent departure of Rafa Benitez could complicate things, with the club yet to appointment a successor to the Spaniard.

The Colombian international, 27, only just returned to action having been out for long, but it remains to be seen whether the Toffees will be open to cashing in on him despite their need to balance the books due to Financial Fair Play.

Not going to happen?

Everton will be keen to appoint their next boss before making any further transfer decisions, and that needs to happen as soon as possible with two weeks left in the winter window.

The Spaniard would not have likely approved of the Colombian’s exit, but whoever succeeds him could have other plans.

Mina has only featured in eight Premier League games so far in 2021-22, and his unavailability is one of the reasons the Toffees struggled.

On his day, the former Barcelona man is a threat at both ends of the pitch, and Newcastle know having him could boost their survival chances.

While they have the cash to splash, whether the centre-back will be open to joining a club neck-deep in a relegation battle remains to be seen.

Everton have also found themselves almost in the drop zone, and strengthening a potential challenger for a place in the Premier League and weakening their squad is the last thing they want.

Nevertheless, nothing can be ruled out as far as the Merseysiders are concerned, and it will be interesting to see what happens with Mina’s future.
