Sean Longstaff update from Sky Sports alerts Everton to prospects
Everton have received a long-awaited update in their hunt to sign Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff after nearly a week of silence, according to Sky Sports journalist Tom White.
The Toffees were interested in the 24-year-old while Rafael Benitez was the manager having previously worked with Longstaff at St. James Park.
Now though, Benitez has been sacked by Everton and Longstaff’s prospects of moving to Goodison Park have hung in the balance since.

Finally, though, Sky Sports have provided an update on the chances of a deal happening between the two clubs.
“Sean Longstaff from Newcastle, out of contract, was heavily linked with Everton but now that Rafael Benitez has gone his old manager at Newcastle, don’t know whether that will still happen,” said White on Sky Sports News (Thursday 20 January, 09:45 GMT)
Stay away
If Benitez had still been in the hot seat, then maybe Longstaff would have been a more viable option given the success the two had together in the North East.

But now the 61-year-old has been sent packing from Merseyside, bringing the Geordie to the club would be a huge risk if he doesn’t mix well with the new boss.
While the club are managerless, it may be best to avoid spending big money on new signings who could well be asked to leave again when the new man eventually comes in.
That could be seen as a risk with Everton 16th in the Premier League but under caretaker boss Duncan Ferguson, they should have more than enough to stay up as it is.
