Lucas Digne reacts on Instagram after Aston Villa victory over Everton

Lucas Digne was struck by a bottle as Aston Villa players celebrated their winner against Everton on his return to Goodison Park today.

The Frenchman left Merseyside for the Midlands this month after falling out with Rafa Benitez, and while he did not get the best of treatments from some of the Toffees supporters, he took it in good faith, taking to his personal Instagram account to react.

Villa ran out 1-0 winners, with Digne providing the assist for Emiliano Buendia’s header, and some of those in the crowd did not like the sight of the opposition players celebrating.

The left-back said: “Amazing effort from the team. Important 3 points.

“It’s still a loving place for me.

“I wish all the best for the season, Everton.”

Disgraceful

The club have since confirmed that police have arrested the supporter for throwing a missile onto the pitch during the game, and they have promised to ban the culprit.

Seeing Digne and the opposition players celebrate would surely have gotten hardcore fans angry, but launching bottles at him and his teammates is distasteful and disgraceful.

Leaving Everton was not his fault, and nobody should take it out on him.

Had he remained with the Toffees, he could have been providing that assist for them.

Benitez took him off set-piece duties, and he proved why the Spaniard was wrong to.

Everton

Digne left Everton without a goal or assist in 13 Premier League games, but he already has an assist in two games for his new club, and it had to come against his old team.

Duncan Ferguson was unable to inspire his side to a much-needed victory, and will be hoping things change quickly.

Years of poor decisions continue to hurt the Toffees, and letting Digne go is surely one of them.

In other Everton news, the Toffees are plotting January loan-to-buy bid for centre-mid hailed by Jack Grealish last month.
