Journalists mock Everton process as they prepare to hire Vitor Pereira

Everton are closing in on the appointment of Vitor Pereira as their new manager and some journalists can’t help but see the funny side of it.

After sacking Rafa Benitez last week, the Toffees have been linked with a host of names to fill the role including Roberto Martinez, Wayne Rooney, Fabio Cannavaro and Frank Lampard [Telegraph].

But it now seems that Vitor Pereira will be the man to step into the vacant role, with the Portuguese coach set to fly in for talks on Monday [Jan 24th, Fabrizio Romano].

Just last week BBC Sport journalist Phil McNulty mocked the club’s process of hiring a manager, with Pereira mooted in what was supposed to be a hilarious manner on Twitter.

Now after news broke of his appointment seemingly being close, fellow journo Kristof Terreur made a quick-witted joke on social media too.

Wild goose chase

It seems as though the process of Everton’s new manager being hired has been a bit of a who’s who among managers.

The club have been linked with all the top names that they could potentially attract, and then lots of random names such as Pereira and Cannavaro.

It’s clear that the owner is being influenced by outside sources such as agents, and there’s no doubt that Kia Joorabchian has something to do with it all.

There is no obvious direction that the club wants to head in judging by their targets, with little-to-no correlation in playing style or philosophy among them.

Without that, it’s hard to have any sort of forward planning among the squad and board and that makes the job of keeping the team up even harder.

Everton are currently in 16th place in the Premier League with one win in 14 games, just five points above the relegation zone.
