Vitor Pereira to fly into Liverpool before weekend for more Everton manager talks

Vitor Pereira is jetting into Liverpool in the next 24 hours in order to hold more talks with Everton, according to 90min.

The football news website reports that Pereira, 53, is currently the favourite to be the next Everton manager after Rafa Benitez was sacked a week-and-a-half ago.

Pereira’s potential appointment has led to widespread anger among Evertonians and the Portuguese boss took to Sky Sports News on Wednesday [26 January] to defend his credentials and to confirm that initial talks had been held with the Goodison ownership.

All flights grounded

We hope that Pereira is flying into Merseyside on EasyJet or RyanAir because we really would be disappointed if he’s hired by Everton.

Benitez was an awful appointment. We were willing to give the Spaniard the benefit of the doubt based on his track record in not only English football but also in major leagues in Europe.

However, the fact that he’s an ex-Liverpool man meant that he was skating on thin ice as soon as he arrived on the blue side of Stanley Park and it was never going to be long before the fanbase turned on him.

And while the Benitez appointment was controversial – and the Spaniard’s short-lived reign at Goodison was plagued by injury and Financial Fair Play issues that were not his fault – hiring Pereira would be worse.

Everyone seems to be pointing to the fact that he’s won numerous titles during his managerial career.

Sorry, but have you seen which titles he’s won?

Yes, winning the Portuguese league with Porto is decent but that was before he had spells in Turkey, China and the Middle East. And also Germany, where he got 1860 Munich relegated to the third-tier.

In his most recent job at Fenerbahce – which was his second spell at the Istanbul club – he was sacked after just a few months.

Pereira’s a total no-no.

What are Everton thinking?

In other Everton news, the Toffees have made an offer to seal a major attacker signing before the deadline on Monday.
