Everton could have been option for Tottenham forward Dele Alli

Everton are likely to miss out on signing Tottenham Hotspur playmaker Dele Alli on transfer deadline day.

The Toffees have been linked with a move for the England international on the deadline day, but according to David Ornstein of The Atheltic, a move to Goodison Park is unlikely.

Frank Lampard is close to signing Donny van de Beek from Manchester United on loan, which means Alli can only be signed on a permanent deal.

Valencia are interested in a loan move for the midfielder, while there are a small number of Premier League clubs who could be interested in getting Alli.

“Other clubs have previously looked at the former England international but instead prioritised other candidates. Everton might have been an option if incoming manager Frank Lampard hadn’t chosen to sign van de Beek instead,” wrote Ornstein for The Atheltic.

More signings to arrive?

Lampard could be looking to make a flurry of signings on the deadline day, but does he have enough time to sort out targets and pull off some deals?

The midfield is one area where Lampard is looking to bolster. Ruben Loftus-Cheek has been linked [The Sunday Mirror; 30 January, page 73] with a move as well.

It’s highly unlikely that the Toffees will make a direct move for Alli. The England midfielder has struggled for regular games under Antonio Conte, and very few clubs would risk signing him permanently.

The 25-year-old has a contract at the club till 2024, and Daniel Levy won’t sell him on the cheap despite his lack of appearances.

The season started promisingly for Alli who appeared to be a part of Nuno Espirito Santo’s plans. However, following Nuno’s sacking, he has dropped down the pecking order.

Everton have already made three signings in January so far. They have bolstered their defence by adding Vitaliy Mykolenko and Nathan Patterson and added depth in attacking areas by signing Anwar El Ghazi on loan.

It’s going to be a busy day for the club, and we can’t wait to see how it unfolds.
