Paul Merson sings Everton praises after win vs Brentford

Paul Merson believes Everton were ‘back to their best’ in the 4-1 win over Brentford that marked Frank Lampard’s first game as manager.

The Toffees claimed a win thanks to goals from Yerry Mina, Richarlison, Mason Holgate and Andros Townsend as Goodison Park enjoyed their first win since the third round of the cup.

The fans were rocking, the stadium bouncing and the team gave it their best, something Sky Sports pundit Merson believes is all that the fans ask for.

“What a start for Frank Lampard,” he said. “The crowd were buzzing, the stadium was rocking. It ticked the boxes for Everton.

“A good performance from Everton, and like you’d expect at Everton. I’ve played there a lot of times, and it’s a hard place to play when they get it right.

“It’s a massive lift for Everton. I’ve never seen Richarlison make so many runs in behind, and no defender wants to keep running back to goal. It opened the game up, allowing (Demarai) Gray and (Andre) Gomes to get on the ball. Back to their best.

“The fans at Everton only ask for one thing: to work as hard as they would work if they were playing for Everton, and they got that today.

“If you’ve got the fans rocking like they were today, it helps the players. In his wildest dreams when Lampard went to bed on Friday night, he couldn’t have hoped for that.”

Buzzing

The fans of Everton are absolutely delighted this morning because they seem to finally have their club back.

A winning performance was the minimum that was needed in the game, but it was the manner of that performance that will have everyone singing from the same hymn sheet.

Everton looked like a proper team, trusting each other with the ball, making runs in behind to stretch the opposition and most importantly giving everything to help protect each other on the pitch too.

The fans will be loving the good mood and the hope that they can now turn their season on it’s head and get out of the relegation battle they find themselves in.

They currently sit in 16th place in the Premier League, just four points above the relegation zone ahead of a game with Leeds next week.
