Everton want to sign Sergio Gomez this summer – report

Everton are interested in signing Anderlecht’s left-sided Spain Under-21 Sergio Gomez this summer ahead of a host of European clubs, according to VoetbalNieuws.

The Toffees strengthened their full-back areas last month by signing Nathan Patterson and Vitaly Mykolenko, but Rafa Benitez has since been sacked and Frank Lampard brought in.

Since his arrival, Patterson is yet to feature and Mykolenko has been noted as the only left-back in the senior squad by the boss so he could look to strengthen in the summer.

That has seen the Blues linked with a move for 21-year-old Gomez, who currently plies his trade with Anderlecht in Belgium.

According to VoetbalNieuws, he is expected to leave the club this summer because of his excellent form this season where he has registered 11 assists so far.

Everton and Southampton are named as ‘realistic’ destinations, but there is also interest from Manchester United, Barcelona and Chelsea. It’s expected he would cost around €9m (£7.5m).

Priorities

Lampard loves an attacking full-back, as he showed at Chelsea by bringing in Reece James to the first-team and signing Ben Chilwell in a £50m deal.

Mykolenko has done relatively well in his first two games so far this season under Lampard, but the fact he’s the only natural left-back in the squad means additions are needed.

Gomez fits in to that mould that Lampard likes, with great attacking instinct and an excellent end product. He has previously played as a winger and attacking midfielder too, so his versatility could be key in this squad.

First and foremost though, Everton need to ensure survival in the Premier League. They currently sit in 16th place in the table, just two points above the relegation zone.

Gomez would be an exciting addition to the side and would definitely add quality to the team, but he won’t join if they’re not in the top flight.
