Jonjoe Kenny makes honest admission after Everton win v Leeds United

Jonjoe Kenny has revealed that he has changed his mindset after producing arguably his best performance for Everton so far.

The Toffees sealed a 3-0 win against Leeds United in the Premier League clash on Saturday [12 February] where Kenny was used in the left-back role.

Despite playing out-of-position, he was outstanding during the game and didn’t allow Raphinha to settle. Marcelo Bielsa was forced to take the Brazilian off at the break.

Kenny said to Evertontv: “I wasn’t playing but it was down to me [to regain place], I looked at myself and changed a lot of things, I didn’t make excuses anymore and forced my way back in,”

“It [personal change] was my mindset of, ‘I want to play for Everton’. I want to be the best player I can.

“I am a local lad but I want to show everyone what I am about.”

Turning point

Could this be the turning point in Kenny’s Everton career?

Under the previous regime and also under Carlo Ancelotti, it looked like Kenny has got no future at the club.

The 24-year-old defender spent the second half of last season on loan with Celtic where he wasn’t impressive at all.

He made only three Premier League appearances prior to this game, and it felt like moving away from Goodison Park would be the best option for him.

However, he played with a lot of confidence against Leeds, and Frank Lampard deserves a lot of credit for that.

Not only was he solid at the back, but also impressive going forward where he managed two key passes.

Lampard has made it very clear that it’s a clean slate under him, and it’s up to the players to deliver.

It remains to be seen whether Kenny starts against Southampton in the next game as well, as Lampard could be tempted to start with Vitaliy Mykolenko, a natural left-back.
