Paul Merson predicts result of Southampton vs Everton

Paul Merson believes Frank Lampard’s ‘hot and cold’ start to life as Everton manager will continue against Everton, he told Sportskeeda.

The Toffees soundly beat Brentford and Leeds since Lampard took over as boss on January 31st, but a shocking display in defeat to Newcastle was also sandwiched between those results.

The Blues take a trip down south to face Southampton on Saturday afternoon and Merson has predicted that it’s the Saints that will leave will all three points on the day in his predictions column.

Everton

“Southampton have been very good in recent weeks and could get another positive result against Everton this time around,” he wrote.

“Ralf Hasenhuttl’s side were outstanding against Tottenham and also put on a spirited showing against Manchester United, while Everton, on the other hand, have blown hot and cold under Frank Lampard.

“Southampton are on a bit of a roll, so I think they’ll win this game.”

Consistency

If there’s one thing that Everton need to master between now and the end of the season under Lampard it’s consistency in their performance.

Their performances as a team and individually against Leeds were phenomenal and exactly what fans need to see, but it’s not a coincidence that the good games have both come at Goodison Park so far.

Without the Goodison crowd behind them, Everton found it hard to get their tempo and style going against Newcastle and they will be hopeful of avoiding a repeat at St Mary’s.

But with five first-team stars ruled out of the game by Lampard already, plus the current good form of Hassenhutl’s team, it’s a very real possibility that the Toffees come away with nothing.

If that’s the case then they face slipping back into a relegation battle after creating a gap between themselves and the pack last week.
