Everton ace Mason Holgate admits to poor season so far, ‘we’re not stupid’

It hasn’t been the 2021-22 season that Everton fans would have been hoping for in August but there is still time to salvage something from the year.

The arrival of Frank Lampard as the club’s new manager on deadline day has reinvigorated the Toffees who are starting to look formidable at Goodison Park once more.

A key player in this revival has been defender Mason Holgate who even scored in Lampard’s first game in charge against Brentford in the FA Cup.

The 25-year-old has been speaking to the Liverpool Echo about the season so far and admits that it hasn’t been anywhere near good enough from the Toffees.

“It’s not been great. Obviously where we wanted to be at the start of the season and the aims we had, to be where we are now is not ideal,” Holgate said.

“There’s no way of hiding it, we’re not stupid. It’s not been the best of seasons so far but the season is not over.

“We can’t sit and think about what’s gone on now. We can only really push on for this second half and go on to achieve everything we can.

“We’re still in the FA Cup and we can go on and just get the winning feeling to build on it from next season.”

Push for silverware

Everton may be teetering close to a relegation fight in 16th but they have found a new lease of life under Lampard and should pull away from the drop in the coming games.

The challenge now is for the Toffees to come away from the season with something to show for it and the FA Cup is a great way to do that.

It might mean sacrificing the odd Premier League game but Lampard has to keep playing his full-strength team in the cup and hope that they can pull them to at the very least a semi-final.

The dream would be to see Everton go all the way and lift the famous trophy at Wembley for the first time since 1995.

Many of the club’s younger supporters won’t have been able to remember that day if they were born at all, so for them to witness glory at last for Everton would leave a lasting mark on the fanbase.
