Everton midfielder Jean-Philippe Gbamin close to joining CSKA Moscow – report

Jean-Philippe Gbamin is close to leaving Everton to join CSKA Moscow, according to Foot Mercato journalist Santi Aouna.

He reports that the deal is “99% done”, where the midfielder will join the Russian side on loan for the rest of the season.

It’s a pure short-term loan deal and the Russian club won’t have the option to sign him permanently, with their transfer deadline tomorrow (22 February).

He wrote on Twitter: “Info: Jean-Philippe Gbamin at CSKA Moscow. It’s 99% done. The Everton midfielder is set to be loaned out with no option to buy until the end of the season at the Russian club.”

Good move

The 26-year-old has experienced a nightmare spell at Everton since joining the club from Mainz in 2019.

He has made just six league appearances for the Merseyside club, spending most of them out on injuries.

He suffered a quadricep injury shortly after joining the Toffees and then went on to suffer one injury after another.

Rafa Benitez hardly trusted him, while Frank Lampard has decided to let him go out on loan after he signed two midfielders in January.

Donny van de Beek has joined on loan from Manchester United till the end of the season while Dele Alli has joined permanently from Tottenham.

It will be interesting to see if Gbamin has any future left with the Toffees. He must use this loan opportunity to get back to the player he once was.

This is his best chance to show his calibre and prove a point to his manager. It’s a good move for him.
