View: Last chance for Jean-Philippe Gbamin to salvage Everton career
Jean-Philippe Gbamin is close to leaving Everton on loan to join CSKA Moscow, according to reports from The Athletic.
The 26-year-old has endured a frustrating spell at Merseyside since joining the club in 2019 from Mainz. Everton paid £25 million for his signature, but he has failed to repay the faith, with a series of injuries restricting his appearances.
In fact, he has only made six appearances in the league of which only three have come this season.
It’s a fresh start for him as he badly needs to move out and play some games to boost his confidence.
Rafa Benitez didn’t appear to trust him, but Frank Lampard has given him an opportunity to resurrect his career.
The midfield will be depleted, no doubt. The likes of Fabian Delph and Tom Davies are still out injured, but it was necessary to ship him out.
Lampard signed two midfielders in the January window and he would have struggled to give Gbamin regular game time irrespective of the current situation.
Donny van de Beek joined in January on loan from Manchester United while Dele Alli has moved in permanently from Tottenham Hotspur.
The big question is what future does he have at Everton? It’s difficult to answer that at the moment as it clearly depends on how Lampard views his situation.
If he performs well, he could convince Lampard that he is still has got qualities to be a regular at the club. It’s a smart decision from Lampard, and the onus is on the player now to salvage his career.
