Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin makes strong admission on his fitness

Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin has admitted that he unestimated how difficult it would be to cope with the pace of Premier League after returning from injury.

The 24-year-old is the talisman figure at the club but he had to sit four months out on the sidelines with a muscle injury this season.

He had scored in Everton’s first three games of the season but was forced to watch the team’s struggles from a distance.

Calvert-Lewin finally made his return in January but he is still struggling to regain his best form. However, the striker has admitted that he is feeling “much fresher now” following the arrival of Frank Lampard.

The England striker told Sky Sports: “There was such a big emphasis on me coming back. The results not being great just made me want to return and help the team but I think I set unrealistic expectations of myself and that was difficult to deal with mentally.

“I came back into the team when momentum was going against us but there is a buzz again now with the new manager here. When things go wrong continually it can create an atmosphere that is hard to shake off and a change is needed. I think that was needed.

“But I feel much fresher now and focused on what I can control.”

This has been a really frustrating season for the England striker.

He was the top scorer at the club last season, but the muscle injury really knocked him down, both physically and mentally.

He has also picked up a minor adductor injury and missed the clash against Manchester City last week.

Lampard needs him to be in top shape and form as Everton are trying to climb up the ladder in the Premier League.

Everton

Everton are teetering on the verge of relegation but they shouldn’t be in this situation in the first place. They have a strong squad but a lack of direction and proper planning has put them in this precious position.

At the moment, the Toffees are struggling to pick up three points. Their performance at Goodison Park has improved under Lampard, but there’s still a lot of work that needs to be done.

Most importantly, they need some wins to get the confidence back in the side, and key players at the club need to contribute more.
