Harry Redknapp rips into Everton squad after thrashing v Spurs

Harry Redknapp has destroyed the Everton squad after their 5-0 loss to Tottenham, labelling them ‘very poor’ and saying they’re in ‘desperate trouble’ while on talkSPORT.

The Toffees were battered in north London, with manager Frank Lampard handed the worst defeat of his managerial career.

When asked what was going wrong after phoning in to talkSPORT’s Breakfast show [Tuesday, March 8th], he blasted one midfielder in particular and said branded the squad as ‘a poor outfit’.

“They’re just a very poor group of players,” he said.

“I watched it on TV last night, obviously Jamie Carragher said it’s a Championship back four, if you go through it man-for-man it’s a poor outfit.

“They’ve recruited badly, they’ve got no legs in midfield, little boy Allan can’t run, can’t get around the pitch. It’s only really the young boy last night [Anthony Gordon] who showed any life and played with some energy. They really are a poor outfit.

“You look at their managers. They’ve had Champions League winning managers, Ancelotti, who couldn’t get a tune out of the club. Rafa Benitez goes there, the same. They’ve gone through a good, a couple of Champions League winning managers.

“The recruitment has been shocking at the club. They’ve brought in average players, average characters. I don’t know. Frank’s got his work cut out.

“If he keeps them up, he’s going to do very well because I think they are in desperate trouble.”

Poor

The defeat was by far the worst moment of the season so far, because of the hope that some fans have had since Lampard’s arrival.

Redknapp is bound to be protective over his nephew, but he is right in the sense that there are lots of problems at the club that existed long before Lampard ever turned up at Goodison Park.

The board have had a lot of trouble over recent years in recruitment and on the pitch, but Lampard isn’t totally absolved of blame in this performance.

They set up poorly tactically, didn’t change anything until it was way too late, and you can argue his team selection was wrong. But he is spot on about the fact Everton are in desperate trouble.

They are one point off the relegation zone and will face six of the top eight in their remaining 13 Premier League fixtures of the season.
