Jamie Carragher destroys ‘Championship’ Everton defence after 5-0 thrashing by Tottenham

Jamie Carragher launched a scathing attack on the Everton defence following a 5-0 thrashing by Tottenham on Monday, labelling them ‘a Championship back four’.

The Toffees were 2-0 down in 17 minutes before a third before half-time. It then took just 42 seconds for Spurs to score again after the break before another goal ten minutes later to make it 5-0.

Everton couldn’t get close to the home side and Carragher, who was a pundit on Monday Night Football on Sky Sports, destroyed the defence for their first half performance labelling them as a second tier unit.

“When you talk about a team, and you talk about they’re too good to go down, it’s because we look at Everton’s strikers – Richarlison, Calvert-Lewin,” he explained.

“This back four is a Championship back four. There’s absolutely no doubt about this whatsoever.

“Seamus Coleman, I actually feel sorry for him, he’s been a great full-back for Everton, but right now this is happening far too much.”

Painful

The performance in general was incredibly tough to watch for anyone with stocks in the blue half of Merseyside.

Frank Lampard’s side never got going and had the game ripped away from their grasp before they even got the chance to find a foothold in the game.

The ease at which that happened was incredibly worrying for Goodison Park fans, considering the run of fixtures they have coming up between now and the end of the season.

The likes of Jonjoe Kenny and Seamus Coleman have really struggled at full-back and the injuries to Ben Godfrey and Yerry Mina have left them very light in the centre, meaning they’re essentially there for the taking.

Lampard needs to find a way to strengthen his team’s structure and fast, before it’s too late and they literally become a Championship back four.
