Jason Cundy: It wouldn’t surprise me if Everton sacked Frank Lampard before the season ends

Everton are in huge danger of going down and could even sack manager Frank Lampard before the end of the season says Jason Cundy.

The disastrous 5-0 defeat at Tottenham on Monday night (7 March) has brought the possibility of the Toffees being relegated from the Premier League for the first time ever into stark contrast.

The side’s away form is so awful this year that huge hopes are being pinned on the next two fixtures at Goodison Park, against Wolves and Newcastle, to give them any hope of staying up, and former Spurs player Cundy would not be shocked to see the manager exit if those games go badly.

In a discussion on talkSPORT on Tuesday (8 March), in a clip posted to the station’s Twitter account, host Andy Goldstein says: “I think there is a massive, massive, massive danger of Everton being relegated for the first time since the early 50s.”

Cundy agrees: “If they play anything like they did last night, they are going down. I can’t sugarcoat this, they were appalling.”

Goldstein then asks: “Is it possible, and we know what football’s like, if they lose those two games, Wolves and Newcastle, could he be sacked before the end of the season?”

After some consideration, Cundy replies: “I don’t think so, but it wouldn’t surprise me if it happened”.

Surely not

The suggestion that the Toffees are heading out of the top flight is becoming shockingly real.

For all that Lampard has lifted the atmosphere around Goodison since his arrival at the end of January, he has been completely unable to lift the away form.

It no longer seems like hyperbole to suggest that the next two games at home are their last chance.

Everton

If they go well then there is a hope they can also translate the home support into something for the visits of Chelsea and Manchester United.

If they go badly, not only will six vital points have gone begging, but there is nothing to suggest they will be able to pick up enough elsewhere.

It seems like former Derby and Chelsea boss Lampard is to forever have the jury out on him, with it impossible to truly gauge if he has done well.

Everton have been such a basket case this season, the uplift from Rafael Benitez’s era is a success, but to still be dreadful away is a failure.

Quite who the club would ever get in who could keep them up after the next two games is anyone’s guess, and surely means removing him is off the table.

But Farhad Moshiri has made his fair share of questionable decisions, and the with the mess his club is currently in, you never know.
