Gabby Agbonlahor puts Marquinhos above Everton defender Michael Keane as worst of the week

Michael Keane is no longer the worst-performing player of the week after PSG’s Marquinhos surpassed the Everton man, says Gabby Agbonlahor.

The Toffees defender had a nightmare in the 5-0 thrashing at Tottenham on Monday night (7 March) as he scored an own goal and was substituted at half-time after having the ball blasted into his face, a week after his error gifted Phil Foden a Manchester City winner.

But the Paris Saint-Germain captain gave Karim Benzema his third as the French side gave up a two-goal lead in crashing out of the Champions League last night.

Speaking on talkSPORT this morning, in a clip posted to their Twitter page, the former Aston Villa striker said: “I thought Michael Keane was the worst performance this week but these PSG defenders have made him look like Beckenbauer.

“Honestly, I was watching the game and I was thinking Marquinhos for the third goal – what happened to defenders just clearing the ball?

“Know the right times to get rid of the ball, and the right times to play, but defenders nowadays don’t want to do the basics of just clearing it.”

Race to the bottom

Considering his fortunes over the past few weeks Everton’s England defender would not have thought many people could have been having a tougher time.

And in light of the performance that Frank Lampard’s defence put in at Spurs it is a turn up that any of them would be in the same sentence as the German legend.

Fans at Goodison would still probably prefer the Brazilian to be the one playing in their back line, despite the high profile disaster at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Everton

The spotlight on the Champions League makes it a bigger stage on which to have a bad game.

And the French giants are in some disarray as a result, but it really doesn’t compare to the depths that the Toffees are plumbing at the moment.

Facing a very real chance of dropping out of the Premier League for the first time, everyone, defence above all, has to pull something together fast.
