Kevin Campbell: Ben Godfrey must start for Everton v Wolves, Demarai Gray to be involved

We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…

Kevin Campbell has insisted that Ben Godfrey must start for Everton against Wolves after the defensive mess at Tottenham.

The centre-back is expected to be fit again for the crucial game at Goodison Park on Sunday (13 March), where the ex-Toffee believes the team will be much-improved in front of the home fans.

Demarai Gray should also be in contention for the match, and the former striker would like to see him involved, as one of the bright spots in a dismal season.

Speaking exclusively to Goodison News Campbell said: “I think Godfrey is nailed on to come in. He’s a lot more athletic, he reads the game, and his pace can get him out of trouble sometimes.

“Whereas you’ve seen Harry Kane running away from defenders on Monday and it’s like ‘what’s going on?’

“So I think adding that bit of pace into the back line could help, and I think Demarai Gray’s been a fantastic signing.

“But the truth is at home Everton are a different kettle of fish. Away from home they need to be able to stay in games, you can’t give teams two or three goal head starts.

“When they’re at home obviously the onus is on Everton but you’ve got the 12th man with you, it makes a huge different being at home from being away.

“So I expect Everton to do a lot better, whether Demarai Gray starts, I don’t think so, but they will be better at home definitely.”

There is huge pressure on the Wolves game, and the subsequent visit of Newcastle the following Thursday.

Frank Lampard has managed to instill a lift in fortunes at Goodison Park, but nothing of the sort away from home where his side have been dreadful.

With the majority of the top teams in the Premier League filling out the rest of the fixtures, much of whether the club stay up will be decided in the next two outings.

In other Everton news, Simon Jordan has done his “homework” and makes a huge assertion on the threat of FFP sanctions.
